About Matheson

Roy and Karen Matheson, Owners of the Matheson SystemBased in Keene, New Hampshire, Roy Matheson & Associates is a long-standing, family-run company that provides training and support for allied health professionals and safety professionals who desire to become “thinking evaluators” in the areas of functional capacity evaluation, ergonomic evaluation and post-offer, pre-placement testing.

We believe that together, we can make a real, positive difference—for an injured worker who wants to return to the job, for an employer who wants to reduce the costs and lost productivity of lost-time injuries, and for a case manager who hopes for a successful case resolution.

Built on the pioneering research and training done by Dr. Leonard Matheson at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in the 1970s, the tools and concepts used by Matheson trained evaluators continue to evolve as pertinent research and best practice standards evolve.

Roy Matheson & Associates offers certification programs for new evaluators as well as advanced courses to provide skill development and continuing education opportunities to existing practitioners. The workshop schedule includes in-person seminars across the United States and Canada as well as webinars.

The Matheson System is based on the idea of contributing to the long-term success of occupational rehabilitation and safety programs by training and supporting therapists and safety professionals to become "Thinking Evaluators." For those specializing in the practice of Functional Capacity Evaluation, the thinking evaluator concept carries special meaning.

Think Outside The Box

Matheson-trained evaluators are encouraged to "think outside the box." This approach is foreign to FCE's based on the use of a particular piece of equipment or on a rigid formula.

Practice Hierarchy

Our approach has two primary focuses: answering case-resolution-relevant questions while adhering to the Practice Hierarchy of

Safety
Reliability
Validity
Practicality
Utility

(You'll learn more about the Hierarchy in your training). This two-pronged approach treats fairly the fee payer and the injured worker while keeping the injured worker safe from re-injury during the course of the evaluation. If training, skill, good practice, and using your brain are attractive to you, the Matheson System may be what you have been seeking.
