Forensic Rehabilitation

An Advanced Workshop on the Evaluation of Work Capacity

The two days spent with Dr. Matheson may be among the most enlightening in the rehabilitation professional’s career development. Although the tools taught in the course are valuable and important, Dr. Matheson also shares career-changing knowledge on how to organize one’s thinking about the data generated by each medical or vocational expert involved in a case. Any evaluator who intends to work at the “expert” level in this field will benefit greatly from this experience.

The goals of this course are to prepare the participant to:

  • Use the Functional Assessment Constructs Taxonomy (FACT) to analyze the work-relevant functional limitations of a complex case.
  • Use the FACT to quantify occupational disability at the personal, familial, and vocational levels.
  • Select appropriate functional assessments based on the FACT.
  • Understand how to prepare for both deposition and trial testimony.
Who should attend:

As a rehabilitation professional matures in his or her career, the day comes to move beyond a workers’ compensation practice. The world of forensic rehabilitation beckons, analyzing and reporting on the consequences of injury or illness in a court of law. The higher level of analytic complexity encountered in forensic practice requires the additional tools and skills that this workshop provides.

Presented by Dr. Leonard Matheson, one of the most experienced occupational rehabilitation professionals in North America, this workshop will introduce the participant to all of the tools used in their practice. Of particular interest to the too-busy practitioner will be their use of the Functional Assessments Constructs Taxonomy to organize data in a manner that logically substantiates professional opinions.  Dr. Matheson has testified on more than 300 occasions and will be happy to share his experience. Information on the development of a forensic practice and how to comfortably present effective testimony will be especially valuable. Application of these tools to actual forensic cases will assist the participant in developing skills that will be immediately useful.

Suggested prerequisites include:
  • At least five years of overall rehabilitation experience, with two years in Functional Capacity Evaluation or other aspects of occupational rehabilitation.
  • Workshop participants should bring a laptop PC with Windows XP and both Microsoft Word and Excel. This is because a user's manual for the FACT in both printed and electronic versions, as well as Excel spreadsheets to analyze MTAP short form data are included in the workshop fee.
