I am a therapist practicing in Cleveland Ohio. I do an extensive amount of work with the Plain Dealer (local newspaper). Their HR person who handles all workman's comp claims called me today asking if I knew of any published literature that truly defines repetitive motion and places objective time frames to it. She is in the process of appealing a claim for (B) carpal tunnel and does not believe that the job truly entails repetitive motion. She is looking for some literature to help her in this matter, and I did not know of any. If anyone does, that would be great. Thanks. :D
Try the OSHA web site. (Use Google to find the exact location) If you need more information, just let me know.
I have been asked this question many times. I think there is not one single answer to this question. It depends on which research you are looking at. Look at the assessment tools that we use to see how the tool defines repetition. For example:
RULA uses "repeated more than 4 times per minute"
REBA uses "Repeat small range motions more than 4 per minute"
The Proactive Job Survey uses different values depending on body segment.
The Strain Index uses different ranges starting with "< 4".
I always stress to whomever I am talking to that all repetition should not be considered without looking at all of the other risk factors.
I hope this helps.
