I have a client that has a severe arthritis flare up causing extreme pain in her hands and wrists . She is required to type reports and emails 2.5-3 hours/day - on a Mac Computer - in an office shared with 4 others. Any ideas/suggestions on speech programs or other tools that could work in this situation would be appreciated. (Also querying ipod mike?)
Dragon Naturally Speaking software is popular and works well. The main problem is that it can take a bit of time to train yourself and get used to the software. Those who I know that use it a lot really do like it but it does take alot of time to get used to and for some, can be complicated.
New computers, especially laptops with Microsoft Windows have a speech to text program already built in. This works well too and seems a little easier. With any software, there are positives and negatives and I think it depends on the person. Ultimately if the person is willing and patient, these programs, either Dragon or what is built into Windows works well.
These two programs are two I would recommend and people I know how used with sucess. Laptops may have a built in microphone so you would not have to buy a headset/microphone. If using a desktop you might have to buy a headset. these range in price from $50 -100 +
