Jim- Can you help clarify the differance between FCE for L &I and one for DSHS - disability ratings?  Can I talk with some one by phone?  Help I am Matheson trained for the last 2.5 years and business is growing - I just want to be sure to keep up the quality.    Karen Thomas Bellingham Washington.

Karen, you can always call

Karen, you can always call the Matheson office for help. Or you can call me on my cell.

The key to doing a straight disability evaluation is to know the system within which you are evaluating. Knowing that you are doing a Washington L and I case, you would obtain a copy of their disability form. If you are doing a union disability eval, get a copy of the union's form.

Once you have a copy of the form in hand, determine the metric they use: do they use Department of Labor terminology (Occasional, Frequent, Constant as well as Sedentary, Light, Medium, Heavy and Very Heavy) or do they use measured metrics (i.e., lifting 54 pounds from 6 to 44 inches, 4 times per hour). Follow their requirements for your report.

Next, read the form to see if they require a statement about participation (physical effort). Most forms, including social security, require a statement about fraud or effort. Complete this statement carefully.

Finally, when you do the evaluation you will have to make a decision about reporting results. If the person does not participate with high levels of effort you may have to report this and not fill out the disability reporting form. Your referral source should be able to help you with this type of issue.
