My FCE letter to the client states that they should take any prescribed medications but shoul refrain from taking non -prescribed pain medications. but my clients often interpret this as NO PAIN MEDS and come in quite literally going through withdraws- What do other evaluators do with this situation. do you send them home to take their meds? can someone give me a better "communications line" to use in the letter? Thanks Karen T.

The letter my office sends out requests that the evaluee refrain from taking pain medications prior to the FCE, as determining thier functional ability without them is preferred (most MD's in our setting are going to DC pain medication prescription when discharged). The letter goes on to state that they may bring them with them if they feel they may be necessary-that helps mitigate the instances where they are reportedly required. This seems to work pretty well. I have actually repeated an FCE because the referring attorney did not pass on this letter and the evaluee subsequently took pain medication prior to testing. Hope this helps!
