Hi guys,

It is mentioned in Matheson system FCE book, chapter of Physical effort, page 9 that "if pain, fear of pain or lack of effort are limiting factors the bell curve pattern will be flattened or absent".

Is pain or fear of pain discussed in any article as potential factors to cause the curve pattern to flatten ? :?: :?

Fear of Pain or Reinjury

In Dr. Matheson's papers from the 1980's he discussed three reasons for failing a MVE test: fear of reinjury, undiagnosed impairment and less than full effort.

The mechanical advantage of the five positions of the Jamar hand grip dictate that a grip curve will be generated in persons participating with full effort. If someone participates with less than full effort, the result of the mechanical advantage will be negated. The result is either an abnormal curve or, of no grip strength is evidenced, a 'flat' curve.

More recent research on grip curve is referenced in the Matheson FCE manual.
