When performing MVE Grip Strength using the Jamar hand dynamometer, 3 trials are performed with the right and left hands over posts 1 through 5. In order to further validate the MVE score by comparing it to the REG score, it is not clear in the Matheson manual (or the research articles we have on grip strength testing) whether the greatest MVE score is taken from the highest score within the 3 trials themselves, or whether it is taken from the highest mean score of 3 trials. Some of our FAE evaluators use the greatest MVE score within the 3 trials (in order to give the evaluee the 'benefit of the doubt'), whereas some use the greatest MVE mean score. What do you suggest?

We use the highest score from each hand. Using the mean would lower the peak score to an average score for that span.

I hope that this helps! Let me know if you have more questions.
