Reliability
The tools used in the Matheson protocol have withstood the test of peer-reviewed publication (Spine, Journal of Occupational Medicine, etc.) and the challenge of scrutiny in courts of law from civil to the British Columbia Supreme Court. There are more than 40 tests in version 3.40. The final reliability measure of each evaluation will vary depending on which mix of tests the evaluator selects. An example of the calculated internal consistency of some of these instruments is the Spinal Function Sort at a Cronbach's alpha of 0.97, with test-retest reliability of 0.89.
Validity
The single biggest issue in evaluation today is "Validity", i.e., do the tests you use test what they purport to test and does your evaluation answer the unique questions posed by each case. The WorkStation fosters validity by basing the evaluation on both standardized, functional tests and the expertise of the evaluator. Seasoned case managers seek a safe, reliable and valid evaluation that provides succinct answers to case-dependent questions. Further, the system prompts the evaluator to answer each question posed by the referral source.
Consistency Across Evaluators and Clinics
The WorkStation maintains consistency of measurement, observation and reporting from evaluator-to-evaluator and from clinic-to-clinic. A clinical team can pre-load the software with a list of questions their evaluation is able to answer. Report formats can be standardized from clinic-to-clinic. Further, a manager can encourage a clinician to use a selected battery of respected, standardized tests rather creating their own tests.
Productivity
The WorkStation testing protocol lets you tailor the evaluation to answer the unique questions presented by each client and referral source. You'll save time by performing only the tests each client needs; you are not locked into performing unnecessary tests. And you'll quickly discover that typing or dictating lengthy reports is a thing of the past. Evaluator's time is too precious to waste; referral sources won't wait days for test results. Report preparation time for each of the evaluations supported by the WorkStation is typically less than 30 minutes; you'll mail the report at the end of the evaluation day!
Two of the most burdensome parts of the documentation process are crunching numbers while trying to remember important observations. The WorkStation automatically calculates coefficients of variation, MET exercise levels, norms and MTM's. Instead of spending time looking up norms or MTM's, the evaluator can focus on more productive responsibilities.
